Ramon Inn is part of the Isrotel chain which
has hotels in all the major cities in Israel. Ramon Inn was the dream of
enterprising hotelier, David Lewis, who set out
to create a small hotel with a great
ambience, in a small town with a great ambience! And that is exactly what he
achieved in building the Ramon Inn, with some 96 rooms and family suites, a
large lobby with plenty of seating and a cosy open fire in the cool season, a
beautiful swimming pool.
Delicious breakfasts -- including home-made cookies, cakes, and preserves
-- are served in the lovely dining room.
Ramon Inn's great evening meals have
earned it the reputation for being the Inn with haute
cuisine in the Negev Highlands!
For that is where you will be: on the high
plateau of the Negev Desert, at an elevation of some 2000 feet above sea level.
Even in spring and summer, the
evenings are wonderfully fresh; and, even
though you are in a desert region --
so designated because of the minimal amount
of rainfall -- it actually snows in winter,
which is why the llamas and alpacas
love it here! These creatures are cute and friendly, but they are not
indigenous to the country, unlike the ibex, or "wild goats"
which you
may see wandering the streets of Mitzpe Ramon, because the entire town is
officially part of the Ramon Nature Reserve! The
Reserve also comprises
the vast and spectacularly beautiful Ramon Crater (Machtesh in
Hebrew), which provides a geological wonderland of beautiful and strange
ancient formations.
Not only is this area rich
in natural history, there is also a fascinating human story to be told in the
Negev region. We'll learn about the mysterious
Nabateans who farmed the desert 2000
years ago and created caravan routes through the Ramon Crater and the Negev
highlands. The Nabateans
built their cities to guard these routes which carried the
perfumes, spices and other precious items from the Far East to the shores of
the Mediterranean. We will also hear about the relative newcomers to this
region -- the pioneers of pre-State of Israel days whose aim was to fulfil Ben
Gurion's dream of "making the desert bloom".
We shall see just how the ancient
and modern inhabitants of the desert "made it happen".
So join us for a beautiful Seder night and a week of tours and activities for
all the family, at a great hotel in one of the most unspoilt and beautiful
regions in the country.
