Felix
Bonfils [b. 1831 (France); d. 1885 (Lebanon)] was sent to Beirut as a soldier
in the French Legion to defend the Christian minority in Lebanon in their
war against the Druze. Upon his return to France he simultaneously regaled
his family with the beauty of the country and opened his photography business.
A few years later, in 1867, Bonfils returned to Lebanon with his family where
he opened The Oriental Photography Shop. Bonfils set out to tour the
region and capture it on film.
Presented are original photos by La
Maison Bonfils of the Holyland in the mid- to late-1800s.
