Yoel Hoffmann
Yoel Hoffmann

Yoel Hoffmann, professor of Buddhism and Philosophy at Haifa University, was born in Hungary and arrived in pre-State Israel as a small child. His mother died shortly after, and Hoffmann was placed in an orphanage until his father remarried. He won the first Koret Jewish Book Award for Katschen & The Book of Joseph (New Directions, 1998).
The Heart is Katmandu, Hoffmann's new work, is a playful and romantic love story set in Haifa, a little difficult to follow because of its avant-garde style, but well worth the struggle.
The Book of Joseph follows the life of an orphan in Palestine.
