From Herzl to Rabin: The Changing Image of Zionism
|
Amnon Rubenstein
explores the tensions that challenge the
historical Zionist goal of creating a state that embodies both a Jewish
and a democratic identity. He blames both the religious right who
believe that they are not subject to the laws of the secular state and
the "post-Zionist"
left whom he characterizes as wanting to destroy the
Jewish character of Israel. Rubenstein believes that the "Law of
Return" is the keystone to a Jewish state and also believes that
"everyone who resides within [Israel's] borders Jew and Arab alike
is entitled to all the rights enjoyed by citizens of democratic
countries." He advocates a return to "authentic" Zionism
in order to
create a culture where these ideals can co-exist.
Amnon Rubenstein is the founder of the Shinnui political party
and has been a member of the Knesset since 1977. He was instrumental in
having Israel's Bill of Rights passed in 1991. These laws define Israel
as both a Jewish and a democratic state and guarantee protection of
human rights for all its citizens. Professor Rubenstein is a graduate
of The Hebrew University of Jerusalem
and holds a Ph.D. in law from the London School of
Economics. In 1965 he was appointed dean of Tel Aviv University's
School of Law.
In its review of From Herzl to Rabin, The Washington Post
stated: "Anyone seeking an authoritative road map to Israel's complexes
and complexities will profit from this elegant and insightful book,"
(BookWorld, Sept 24, 2000).
