Only Yesterday
Written in 1945, but just translated into English, Only Yesterday is a masterpiece novel by Israeli Nobel Laureate, S.Y. Agnon. It tells the story of the idealists who "ascended" to Palestine during the Second Aliya (1904-1914). Agnon himself was part of this group of Zionists who left Europe in order to work the Biblical land and revive Hebrew culture. These founders of the modern state met with less than ideal conditions and this historical reconstruction of the beginnings of the modern state is beautifully told by Agnon with an excellent translation by Barbara Harshav. Read this epic novel before your next visit!
